Sam Briant-Evans

Sam graduated from the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester with a BSc Hons in Agriculture in 2005.  He joined the Velcourt Management Training Scheme in November 2007 and was based at Home Farm Dairy, at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire.

In July 2008 Sam was appointed farm manager at the Fortescue family’s Castle Hill Estate in North Devon – a new business under a Velcourt (Andercourt) management agreement.
Since taking the position 2008 Same has taken the dairy farming business through a number of significant changes including:

  • Changed from TMR fed Holstein Friesian cattle calving all year round to spring calving cross bred cattle on an extended grazing grass based system.
  • Cow numbers increased from 350 to 850.
  • Major investment in building and field infrastructure including cow tracks and water system and two new dairies built in 2009 and 2010.
  • Current land base extends to 480ha, entirely down to grass.
  • All dairy followers reared ‘in house’.
  • Grow own forage.
  • Since October 2013 Velcourt are now farming the business independently of the estate as tenants under an FBT agreement.
