Forward crops the focus of attention

Crop inspections 2014

Velcourt farm managers meet together on a regular basis to share information on a regional and national level ensuring colleagues are aware of technical crop issues, developments and ideas from within the group can be shared.  Crop inspections started last week and will run until June. These are  a discussion group forum, led by technical director Keith Norman, the regional farms director and the local farm managers:

Up to date information is fed back through the independent R&D team to the farm managers covering new technology, products in the pipeline live data on insect migration and disease patterns. This is all used in conjunction with on-farm observations to allow key agronomic decisions to be made and product selection manipulated to maximise crop potential.

Key subjects for discussion at last week’s crop inspections were:

  • Uptake of Nitrogen timing and effect on yield on forward OSR
  • OSR canopy management
  • Nitrogen dose rates and timing
  • Growth regulation in fast moving and forward crops
  • Disease prevalence in winter crops
  • Aphid control in spring crops and OSR without neonic dressings
  • SHDI fungicides, rates, timing and cost benefit
  • Oilseed fungicide spray timing
  • Management of Winter Barley for feed and malting
  • Herbicide efficacy
  • Water logged crops
  • Effects on delayed Spring drilling
  • Crop potential and yield predictions

The next round of crop inspections are due in mid-March and early April, where key decisions on applications, timings, rates and crop development will all be up for debate.
