A return to Velcourt’s Winter Wheat Challenge

Ag students challenge to grow the best Winter Wheat crop

Students from six UK colleges have again risen to the challenge of growing the best plot of Winter Wheat at the Cereals event site in the 2014 Cereals Challenge.

In its fifth successful year, the Cereals Challenge is organised by Hutchinsons and Velcourt and aims to encourage a new generation of agronomists and farm managers into the industry by offering a real-time crop to manage and sell.

Harper Adams University, Newcastle University, The Royal Agricultural University, University of Nottingham, Easton and Otley College and Riseholme College all qualified for a place in the final six plots this year.

Each team was handed their own plot of Winter Wheat on the site of the Cereals event at the Chrishall Grange Farm in Cambridge. The teams will be responsible for the plots from now until just before the Cereals Event in June. The winning team will be announced at the Cereals Event on 11th June and will receive a trophy and a prize of £1,000 to share, the winning college will also be awarded £500.

Judges, Velcourt’s Keith Norman, Dick Neale, Technical Manager of Hutchinsons, and host farmer Robert Law, will assess each team on an array of areas including technical merit, gross margin, yield potential and quality and timeliness of recommendations.

The Teams have to justify why they have, and sometimes why they have not, applied a product

Nick Shorter of Velcourt and Paul Hobson of Hutchinsons launched the Cereals Challenge last Tuesday outlining to students the success of the Challenge in offering an insight into careers in agronomy or farm management. Since the Challenge was launched Hutchinsons has taken on two students into their Agronomy Foundation Training Programme and Velcourt now have two former contestants on their Trainee Farm Managers programme.
