Steam engine draws the crowds to Open Farm Sunday

Open Farm Sunday

Crowds gathered at Green Drove Farm near Pewsey for the farm's second Open Farm Sunday event on the 17th June. The weather bucked recent trends and visitors were treated to a rare blessing of sunshine throughout the day. Over 200 people of all ages attended and were given an insight into modern farming methods and countryside management by Farm Manager Nick Down and his team.

Nick’s aim in hosting Open Farm Sunday is to improve the relationship with the farm’s close neighbours from the town of Pewsey and surrounding areas. Being an urban fringe farm with a large network of footpaths and bridleways, he sees that it is important visitors to the farm understand the farming practices and environmental schemes that are on the farm.

Nick aimed to keep it a low key and informal event that involves a trailer ride around the farm and machinery and poster displays around the main farm and surrounding fields.

The star attraction of the day was Velcourt Agronomist Tim Mayhew’s 1906 Burrell Steam Traction Engine, this allowed visitors to see a display of agricultural machinery that spanned over a 100 years!
